Dramatic SuccessCongratulations to Nick Sheard, who was a Beaver, Cub and Scout at 20th Oldham. Nick (on the left) is currently studying Drama at Huddersfield College, and has just recently produced, directed and presented his own production of Waiting For Godot at the Millgate Theatre in Delph.
After a couple of last minute problems, Nick ended up acting in the play as well, in what turned out to be a very mature and accomplished production. Bravo, Nick! |
Eve Cockburn
We have received the very sad news that Eve Cockburn died earlier this month. Eve was a Cub and Scout at 20th Oldham with her sister Beth and they were both valued members of the group, who also volunteered as Young Leaders with the Cub Pack. My best Scouting memory of Eve and Beth was at a District Camp. The theme was Survival and on Saturday night the Scouts slept in shelters they had built. Most of our Scouts appeared the next morning looking as though they had barely survived the zombie apocalypse - Eve and Beth came to breakfast looking characteristically calm and immaculate.
Eve was a talented and capable young woman and all of us at 20th Oldham will be thinking of her and her bereaved family and friends at this sad time.

Queen's Scout
At the end of last term, our Cub Leader Freya was presented with her Queen's Scout Award. The highest award available to young people in Scouting - it requires them to have completed their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, plus participating in at least six different activities in Scouting covering the themes International, Community and Environment. For Freya some of these were sessions that she planned and delivered for our Beavers and Cubs. As one of the 200 or so young people who had earned this prestigious award in the UK this year, Freya was invited to participate in the National St George's Day Parade at Windsor Castle, which was presided over this year by His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent, and attended by the Chief Scout, Bear Grylls.
After the Parade in the private quadrangle of Windsor Castle, the Queen's Scouts attended a service in St George's Chapel, which had a very moving address by Brendan Cox, who talked about the importance of the values inherent in Scouting, and how they have informed his life, and that of his late wife Jo, who had been a Guide. We are immensely proud of Freya and everything that she has done to get this far. The fact that we are a relatively new Scout group and now have two Queen's Scouts to our name (out of only 3 in Oldham District in the last 15 years or so), is also a great source of pride to our group |
Photography
3 members of the Saddleworth Photography Group joined us for a couple of weeks this term to help our Scouts earn their Photography Badge. After a first session, taking portrait photographs at the hall, we all headed over to the Butterhouse tunnel to learn about taking long exposure pictures in the dark. We're hoping to have an exhibition of our work for you to see after half term.
Advent
As is traditional, the first window of the Uppermill Advent calendar, is at Uppermill Methodist Centre. Can you guess this year's theme?
Apple Week
Beavers and Cubs were tasting different varieties of apple this week, to decide upon their favourite. For the second year running, some picked Bramleys!
The Cubs made microwave apple crumble too - and most agreed that it was pretty good. One Cub even said it was better than grandma's, but we'd better not tell you who that was!

Advent Calendars
Beavers were designing the fronts of their Advent Calendars (with a difference) this week. It's also a time to remember families who maybe can't afford little luxuries like a chocolate Advent calendar for their children. Please take the opportunity to drop one off in the trolley at UMC in the next week or so, to be passed on to Oldham Foodbank. Thanks.
A Monopoly on Games
Harvest
We were in the happy position of having three new volunteers attend the Appointments Committee last Thursday (not as daunting as it sounds!) We are very happy to welcome Jude (Section Assistant with Beavers), Alec (Cub Leader) and Matt (Assistant Scout Leader). You will have seen them in action with our groups over the last few weeks and Alec took his promise at the Harvest Parade Service. More volunteers are still very welcome.
The Harvest Service included a wonderful performance of The Good Samaritan by the Cubs, and some of the Beavers assisted by taking up the offering. If you were unable to attend the service, please bring along your Harvest gifts this week (or indeed any other time) we have a trolley in the entrance to the Methodist Centre for people's contributions throughout the year. There is a list of particularly useful gifts here. |
Bob, admiring some of the gifts brought to church on Sunday.
Leaders and Helpers Needed
Founded as a Cub Pack in 2004 by Derek Stacey, 20th Oldham Uppermill Methodist Scout Group now has 3 thriving sections of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, with about 60 young people coming along each week. The groups have gone from strength to strength, with many adventures along the way, and this 10th anniversary year our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts have enjoyed sleepovers, camps, climbing and hikes. Making all this happen needs adults prepared to join in the fun, and we do need more people who can come along to help, whether you would like to join us in uniform as an assistant leader, or feel able to join our rota of helpers who may only come along once a term or so. Helpers at all sections are very welcome, but the need is particularly pressing for Cubs and Scouts. After October half-term we will have more than 20 Scouts, and Methodist guidelines require us to have 3 adults present where that is the case. We have ambitious plans for the future, allowing more children to enjoy the opportunities that Scouting offers, but we need your help. To find out more about 20th Oldham please speak to Erica or Rachel, or email [email protected]
Congratulations
Help for the Scouts of Vanuatu
The islands of Vanuatu have been devastated this week by Cyclone Pam, and a huge amount of damage has been done. To help provide some assistance to our fellow Scouts and their communities this rather attractive badge (suitable for a camp blanket, or just general admiring) has been created, and is being sold to generate funds. It is a very reasonable £2 and I will be taking orders this week. Thanks.
Quick update: the badges have been ordered (all 25 of them!) and should be in the post today. |
Queen's Scout
At Explorers last night our Cub Scout Leader Tom Upton was given his Queen's Scout Award by the County Commissioner Neil Gorton, with District Commissioner Rob Partington also present, as well as Tom's fellow Scout and Explorer Anthony Sheard, who came back from university for the occasion.
Tom was one of the original members of 20th Oldham Cubs and then Scouts and continued at Uppermill as a Young Leader when he became an Explorer at the age of 14. Last Autumn he completed the Getting Started training and became our interim Cub Leader in January. As a consequence of completing his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, together with other Scouting accomplishments Tom has now achieved the prestigious rank of Queen's Scout, the first from Oldham for 20 years. Records show that for every 100 people who join Scouting, four will go on to become Queen's Scouts, so this is a great moment for us. |
France 2016
|
Places are now available on the District trip to the Arcêche in summer 2016, but they are going fast - so take a look at the details at the bottom of our calendar.
|
Plans |
We spent a bit of time this evening discussing our plans for what's coming up. There are more details to be finalised, but Cubs and Scouts are invited to the District H2O fun at the beginning of February, and hardy Scouts can join in the fun at Freezercamp at the end of half term. We will add full details to the calendar as we get them.
|
Happy New Year
|
All units return on Tuesday 13th, and we look forward to welcoming our new members of the leadership team, Peter will be taking his promise in front of the Scouts, and Tom returns in his new role as leader. We are planning lots of events for the new term, please make sure you return your data forms tomorrow, and let us know if you are coming climbing.

Paris photos now on the website
After a fantastic trip to Paris with 23 Cubs and Scouts, we had a very enjoyable time trawling through hundreds of photos to find the best to include on our website.
To view them click here - remember that you will need the password to access the friends page for obvious reasons but that can be obtained by sending a quick message through the contact us link here or on the toolbar above.
We can also supply a pdf version of the Paris photobook we created for a small charge - again send a message as above.
Enjoy!

Awards galore!
21st January 2014 saw us receive more awards than we knew what to do with. After a very successful presentation evening showing photos of our trip to Disneyland Paris in October, we gave out Chief Scout Gold Award challenges badges to every single one of the Scouts.
More impressively we were able to ask the ADC Scouts, Barry Ratcliffe to award Freya her Chief Scout Gold Award and certificate - the first such award that has been presented by 20th Oldham Scout Group.
And still the awards came - Ian Temple-Heald, Oldham's District Commissioner, presenting Derek Stacey with a very rare Chief Scout's 'Award of Merit' having gone the extra mile in service to Scouting,

ShelterBox patrol challenge - Eagle patrol's Coffee Morning
Eagle patrol, aided by former patrol leader and now Explorer, Freya Upton, raised a tremendous £200 planning and running a coffee morning on 29th June 2013 as their contribution to the fundraising challenge in aid of the great work done by Shelterbox around the world.
Home made cakes, biscuits and drinks were snapped up during the course of the morning as well as tombola prizes and other goodies.
The morning was well supported by members of the Church, all of whom got to see a Shelterbox in the flesh and learn more about the work done by the charity. Many thanks to the Shelterbox representatives who gave up their time to assist in making the day a big success.
Well done Eagle Patrol. You should be proud of yourselves - we are! Click here to see the photos.

Beaver News
Welcome back and Happy New Year! For the next couple of weeks we are
thinking about safety and what to do in an emergency - this week we discussed
what to do if there's a fire alarm, and the Beavers learned how to put an
unconscious person into the recovery position.
The Beavers have all received a letter and consent form today (15th Jan) about our space-themed sleepover on
Saturday, January 26th.
Please let us know next week if your child (or you) will be able to come.

Hedgehog Night
27th November 2012
Beavers were finding out about hedgehogs this evening, and making little hedgehog
cakes (or piles of autumn twigs depending on how you looked at them). They were
very popular, and I said that I would post the recipe here - they're really very
easy.
We melted 50 grams of butter, 60 grams of golden syrup and 110
grams of chocolate.
We crumbled 3 shredded wheat biscuits and carefully
stirred in the melted mixture.
We then tried to shape the mixture into
hedgehogs (with mixed success).
The hedgehogs can be put into bun cases and
chilled in the fridge (or just eaten straight away!)

Alton Towers trip
21 of our Scouts and Explorers braved zombies, Sonic the hedgehog and, despite their experiences in France, even more river rapids in a white knuckle-testing trip to Alton Towers on the 22nd September 2012.

District trip to the Ardeche, France
20 of our cubs and scouts travelled with 16 others from Oldham District, together with 8 leaders, to Labeaume, in the Rhone-Alpes region of southern France to take part in a hugely successful international activity camp in late July 2012.
The young people took part in caving, climbing, archery, high ropes, kayaking and river trek, as well as a very demanding 2 day descent of the Ardeche river by canoe, sleeping overnight under the stars with only mosquitoes to keep them company!
We were able to update parents on the activities that were being attempted by posting photos and info on facebook and twitter on a daily basis, the feedback from which suggested it had been very much appreciated. To access the photos and posts, please access the respective 20th Oldham accounts by clicking the buttons above.
Work has already begun on a presentation evening when the photos and some stories of the trip can be shared with families and a CD containing all the trip photos will be available to take away on the night. Watch this space for more details.

Oldham District Fun Day
Over £300 was raised at the Fun Day held at the White House pub on Oldham Edge which doubled as a final meeting for the France trip that more than a dozen of our Cubs and Scouts are going on, along with Derek and Andrew. 36 children and 8 leaders in total from Oldham District will be travelling by coach to the Ardeche in the south of France at the end of July for a week of activities that includes caving, kayaking and canoeing, river trek, raft building and high ropes. Not to mention the site's own swimming pool!

Come on England!!!
Scouts, Cubs and parents/friends enjoyed watching England's final Euro 2012 group game against Ukraine on 19th June in the church hall. Gone were the uniforms, replaced with football shirts and neckers for the celebrations as England went through after a nervy game. Chips, prawn crackers, crisps and drinks helped the team on its way and a sweepstake saw many of the Scouts walk away with sweets, chocolate and other goodies.
A great night was had by all and hopefully we'll be able to do the same again - movie night next? Popcorn anyone?!!
Cubs Enjoy Jubilee Party-Time!
In honour of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II the following week, the Cubs enjoyed a Jubilee party, made flags and shared a beautiful cake on 29th May.
Little food was left by the time the Scouts arrived later in the evening but the Cubs left happy!
Congratulations Ma'am!!!

Diamond Jubilee celebrations
20th Oldham Beaver Colony has been very busy recently - no change there!
Since the Queen's Diamond Jubilee is being celebrated with a River Pageant on the Thames, the Beavers have been making and decorating their own boats.
We will be trying out our craft in the river just upstream of the stepping stones on Tuesday 29th May 2012, so suitable footwear for getting wet should be worn!

2012 Photography competition launched
The inaugural 20th Oldham Photography competition has been launched following the excellent standards set by the Scouts who have successfully earned their Photography badge over recent weeks. Highlights were the photos of pets and the iconic London landmarks captured by more than one of the Scouts on recent trips to the capital.
The competition is open to all our sections and will see a trophy and a prize awarded for the best entry. For more details see the blog page or click here
Scouts visit Hardcastle Crags
The Scouts had a great trip out to Hardcastle Crags in Hebden Bridge on 19th May. They took part in orienteering, den building and poo composting! They saw how the National Trust estate was entirely self-sufficient - generating its own energy from solar panels and turbines, storing the energy in huge banks of batteries and even saw the effect on the energy stores of the water heater in the cafe firing up. They played on the games in the Entertainment Emporium and dressed up in period costumes and bowler hats!
A fantastic day was had by all - even the leaders Derek, Martin and Andrew. Many thanks to Sarah and Mary in particular for all their help and guidance. David Thornton even asked when we could come again!

Cubs and Scouts zoooom ahead!
As a special end of term treat, all the cubs and scouts went to Stonerig Raceway in Lees to race each other on 5 superb Scalextric tracks.
Lots of fun - and high speed crashes - were had by all.
Lots of thanks to the staff at Stonerig for agreeing to let us take over the tracks on their day off!

Winter Camp
16 Scouts and 5 Explorers attended the District's Winter Camp at Bramhope near Leeds from 18th to 20th November. Activities included rifle shooting, archery, climbing and Gladiators. Although the Explorers should really have known better, their efforts on the pedal carts was a sight to behold! Check out the video here. The Manton brothers Gladiator challenge was also keenly contested - watch that by clicking here.
Cubs 'sleep'-over (?)
At risk of breaching the Trades Description Act, 26 Cubs, 3 Explorers and 5 leaders took part in a Cub sleepover at Church on Friday 11th November 2011. Activities ranged from beach volleyball - in which the Cubs were victorious in a challenge match against the Leaders/Explorers - codebreaking and poster drawing. The winning poster drawn by Louis Broadbent can be seen on our home page. All the Cubs earned the Creative Challenge award and an extra Nights Away point. Ethan Stacey and Nicky Scott made presentations to the other cubs to complete their Chief Scouts Silver Award, the highest achievement possible in the Cub Scout section - well done both! Despite the majority of the cubs still being awake at 2am (!) everyone had a great time - William Marston was awarded the 'best cub of the sleepover' and Eve Cockburn was presented with her October 'Cub of the Month' trophy.
Thanks to all the Cubs for making the night such a success - and to the Explorers and leaders who are probably still recovering!

Uppermill Scouts in arresting challenge!
Eagle and Panther patrols earned the right to get actively involved in our work towards the Chief Scouts Gold award as a result of their contribution to the Community Challenge tasks that they were set recently. They were invited to visit Uppermill Police Station on 4th October 2011 by PCSO's Lorna Conway and Lee Lockwood and were given a guided tour of the station - even getting to try out the riot shields and enter the X5 operations room. The scouts were shown the interview facilities, got to sit in Inspector Milovanovic's chair and were allowed to set off the sirens in the marked police car. They followed this up by taking part in a walk around the local community, identifying properties most at risk from burglars and posting leaflets through the doors of houses and flats affected. Both patrols found the night fascinating and conducted themselves in a very responsible and appropriate way.
This is likely to be the first of many activities that 20th Oldham carry out with our local community police officers in enabling the Scouts to earn their Community Challenge Award badge, and move closer to the Chief Scouts Gold Award.
Huge thanks to PCSO's Lorna Conway and Lee Lockwood for their considerable efforts in arranging this visit and for the further work that they have planned.

Scouts get Fit!
As part of our ongoing badge work and building on fantastic achievements by some of our Scouts on their recent trip to Italy, we embarked on attempting to get as many of the Scouts as possible to begin work towards the Chief Scouts Gold Award. This is the highest award that can be achieved within the Scout section and one that is very highly regarded.
One of the key elements of the Chief Scouts Gold Award is the fitness challenge which requires the Scout to accept a physical challenge, which can be new or builds on an earlier achievement. To successfully pass the challenge, the Scouts had to:
a. Spend between four and six weeks preparing for the event, through an agreed programme of activity or training.
b. Show an understanding of the importance of a sensible and appropriate diet and the need for sufficient sleep.
c. Be able to explain the dangers and harmful effects of smoking, alcohol and drugs.
d. Successfully take part in the chosen physical challenge.
Twenty of the Scouts completed this challenge during March and April and were awarded this badge. Work continues on other challenge areas - the global challenge and creative challenge awards are the next targets!

Scouts take the Fitness Challenge
Over the coming weeks the souts will be monitored on their fitness to complete the fitness challenge.
This is what is required
Choose a physical challenge which is new or which builds on an earlier achievement. The challenge could be an athletic event, a charity swim, a long distance cycle ride, a pool life-saving test or a long distance challenge hike.
Essentially, it can be any event that requires the need to train physically in order to succeed. Consider a variety of activities or interests in choosing this challenge, and agree your choice with a leader.

Scouts take part in County 5 a side competition
20th Oldham's Scouts represented Oldham District in the County 5 a side football competition on 7th November 2010 at Oldham Sports Centre. It wasn't to be our day in the end but all 7 of the Scouts that won the District competition in September took part again and did the group proud. Goals from Tommy Scott, a peach of a left foot goal from Edward Gray and a dead ball rocket shot from Luke Stacey were the highlights in front of goal. Excellent tackling and support play was shown in abundance - again - by Sam Bottomley, Ben Woodward and Kenny Scott. Alex Berkley made some superb saves in goal, including a cracking left handed save when the game was all square. Well done!
Happy Birthday to us!!!
Cubs was 6 years old on the 2nd November, following the first meeting during this week in 2004. Lots of singing and a huge cake marked the occasion, with a great time being had by all. Look out for photographs of the celebrations in the photos section shortly.
Bookworms!
14 of our Cubs were awarded the Bookreader activity badge on 12th October 2010 following their recent visit to Uppermill Library and the subsequent completion of the badge requirements. To see what they had to do to achieve the badge, click here.
Facebook group
We've also created our own facebook group page now - search for 20th Oldham Scout Troop and then request to join the group - for obvious reasons it is a closed group and you'll need to be added as a member, but it will hopefully be an extra way of staying in touch. Log into your own facebook page first then click here to link to the Beaver group, here for the Cubs group and here to link to the Scout group.

Sam Bottomley
Kenny Scott
Edward Gray

District Camp, Villeneuve, Aosta, Italy
21 of our Cubs and Scouts, together with Skip and Andrew, joined other Cubs, Scouts and leaders on an 8 day adventure holiday close to the foot of Mont Blanc, or Monte Bianco as the Italians call it!
Even 22 hour journeys each way couldn't dampen the enthusiasm of the boys and girls who made the trip, although the smell on the way back came close to doing so!
A more detailed report will follow, as will the observations of some of the Cubs and Scouts themselves. To view the photos click here.
This is just a selection of the activities we enjoyed:-
Abseiling
Archery
Bouldering
Bowling
Cable cars up Mont Blanc - with some excellent campfire songs at the top - to the bemusement of the French and Italians watching on!
Canoeing
Climbing
Fencing
High Ropes
Kayaking
Gorge Walking
Squeeze
Team Challenge
And last but most definitely not least ...
White Water rafting - a big hit with all, regardless how big and daft they are!

Gardening efforts secure 20th Oldham proud nomination
As a result of unstinting effort on the part of Cubs and Scouts led by leader Eddie Butterworth, the improvement seen in the park just off Smithy Lane has resulted in an unexpected honour - nomination for a Pride in Oldham award.
