After a summer break, we started our Autumn term with a planning meeting - as well as our leaders Matt, Lee, Jude and Tom, it was great to be joined by some parents who are going to be helping us to put our programme together, and by three of our Young Leaders. I am gradually getting around to posting our programmes on the 20th Oldham website, why not take a look and see what we’re up to?
Before meetings had even restarted, 10 of our Cubs enjoyed a Centenary Sleepover with a Jungle Book theme. We made the most of having Tom home to help plan and lead and joined up with Cubs from Greenfield and Lydgate for our very own Sadd CubJam, with activities and a film at UMC on Saturday, followed by a walk over to Greenfield where we played games and cooked over fires at St Mary’s school. For some of our newer Cubs it was their first overnight experience with us, and they rose to the challenge magnificently.
It’s not just about learning experiences for the young people. Eight of us have recently completed our HSE Level 2 First Aid qualification. It was good to have the opportunity to run a course just down at UMC, and make it possible for so many of us to attend, and Carl from Tailored Training was a great instructor. We’ll be passing on some of what we’ve learned via the Emergency Aid badge this term.
One of the amazing things about Scouts is that we are part of a worldwide family. This is emphasised in October each year with the Jamboree on the Internet (JOTI). This is a weekend when Beavers, Cubs and Scouts all around the world use Skype and dedicated chatrooms to get in touch with each other and find out more about their experiences of Scouting. We are using UMC to run an event for our Scouts and the Oldham Explorer Units (the next step up from Scouts) one evening, but we will also have JOTI up and running as a drop-in for all sections on Saturday, 15th October, so why not come down for coffee that day, and see what it’s all about?
Even more exciting than meeting up with Scouts from other countries virtually, is to do it in person, and Freya - who will this month be making the leap from Young Leader to Leader as she turns 18, has had the good fortune to be selected for the UK Contingent attending the 15th World Scout Moot in Iceland next summer. Watch out for updates about her preparations and fundraising in future newsletters.
