All of our groups have enjoyed lots of interesting activities this term, including the Cubs doing a bit of cooking - you can make a really delicious apple crumble in just 10 minutes, and it gave them great experience of using peelers and knives - we only needed one plaster! We are very grateful for the support from church volunteers and parents, which makes it possible for us to do these things.
Some Scouts are off for another taste of adventure this weekend, joining Scouts from 3 other Oldham groups for our Winter Camp - this is the one where we get to stay indoors! Inspired by a family visit to Brownsea Island, home of the first ever Scout camp, Freya and Erica are now thinking about possible camps and trips for next year. Camping really is at the heart of what Scouting is all about, and we would welcome anyone who would like to join us as camping assistants, even if they aren’t able to get to regular meetings.
Opportunities can crop up at the most unexpected times, and just a couple of weeks ago, we saw an advertisement one Wednesday evening saying that there was a course available for Scout Leaders to learn to be fencing coaches that Saturday. Freya had a spare moment, and so she is now fully qualified to offer a 6-session course to our Scouts than lead to them gaining their Master at Arms badge, as well has trying out an interesting new sport - all we’re waiting for now is the kit to arrive!
We have some serious planning to do once we return from half term. 20th Oldham will be running the Uppermill ScoutPost again, this is something we introduced last year, where we sell stamps for just 20p each, and then Scouts will deliver the stamped cards around Uppermill. A great way to send local cards, and at the same time support our chosen charities of Oldham Mountain Rescue and Shelterbox, which will be receiving the proceeds.
We will also be combining with UMC to hold our second Christmas Fair, on Saturday, December 3rd, so watch out for more details.
This year has marked the Centenary of Cubs, and on Friday, December 16th, Cubs across the country will be gathering to renew their promise on the very day, 100 years on. We are no exception and would like to invite members of the congregation, particularly if you were ever a Cub or Cub Scout Leader to join us for this special occasion. Save the date - more details to come.
Another date we hope you’ll save is November 19th when Freya is holding a fundraising Pudding Night to raise funds to go to the World Scout Moot, we’ll be baking furiously and hope to see you there
