I'd spend £1000 on ....

23/9/2012

The task is simple.

All you have to do is tell us what you'd do with £1000 if your patrol was given that sum.

The only rule is that it needs to be spent on either equipment for use at Scouts or on an activity or activities that we can arrange and attend through Scouts. Other than that, it's up to you how the money is spent.

Don't assume that this is just a hypothetical task - you could very well have money to spend if you suggest the best way forward!

Happy spending!!!

22/5/2012

Ten of our Scouts have recently earned their Photographer's badge with some excellent work over a number of weeks, culminating in some very high quality submissions for the final judging.

To build on these new found skills and to win both a trophy and a prize, we are pleased to announce the inaugural 20th Oldham Photography Competition which is launched tonight.

Entries are invited from all sections - not just Scouts. The photo must however be taken by the young person themselves and not by someone else!

The theme for this years competition is 'action'.

To enter email your photograph to andrew@20tholdham.co.uk telling us:
1.   what the title of your photo is
2.   what camera it was taken with
3.   where it was taken
4.   what you like about it

The closing date for entries has been extended - to allow you to enter photographs taken on your summer hols -  to 10th September 2012. For more details speak to Andrew or email any queries to the above email address.

Get snapping and have fun! Good luck!

Winter Camp 2011

5/10/2011

So, we're off to Bramhope for a Winter camp similar to the one that we had at Bradleywoods.
Have a look at the website for Bramhope by clicking here and have a think about the activities that you'd like to take part in. Feel free to add a comment above if there is something in particular you would like to do.

The competition for the next few weeks is however - who can come up with the best camp gadget? Ideally it would be made from materials readily available in the woods surrounding the camp but a little bit of leeway will bhe allowed when considering how useful your gadget is. You can work in patrols or in pairs, depending on how adventurous your gadget is.

There will be a prize for the winner(s).

Any questions, just leave a comment and Jack, er, sorry, the WebMaster will get back to you.

Community Challenge award

21/9/2011

We are delighted to have been assisted by members of our local police force to get our Community Challenge award off the ground. Following on from an interesting talk by PCSO's Lorna Conway and Lee Lockwood about their role in and with the community, the Scouts have been asked to identify issues that they believe exist in our community and come up with some ideas as to how those issues can be tackled and what they would need to do that.

Each of the 4 patrols has been asked to come up with an issue, their suggestions about how to tackle it and what they would need to do that. The more detail that can be given, the better the activities that can be organised will be.

It is hoped that this can dovetail with further direct work in the community that can be agreed in partnership with PCSO's Conway and Lockwood.

Please post your responses below by clicking on the Comments button above.

If you need to access another copy of the activity sheet that was handed out this week, that is available by clicking here

I'd like to take part in the Discover Scuba sessions and gain my Water Sports badge ...

28/6/2011

As discussed at this week's troop meeting, we need you to discuss with your parents what you saw last week in the presentation by Scott from Probe Diving and add a comment here to confirm whether you would like to take part in the Discover Scuba session. Having tried the session with Scott and with Jackster and his Dad, I can confirm that is well worth the effort and I'll definitely be taking it further.

The session will be run on one evening or weekend afternoon. Prices will depend on numbers but we just need an initial indication of people interested.

Add a comment to this post to register your interest and we can make some progress with it.

3 occasions that I have 'done my best'

3/5/2011

As discussed at tonight's meeting, one of the steps towards the completion of the Promise Challenge of the Chief Scouts Gold Award is being able to describe three occasions recently when you have done your best. To fulfil the requirements of the task, just click on the 'Add a comment' button below and tell us when and what each of your 3 examples of 'your best' were and how it has made a difference - whether to you or to anyone else.

One example would be:
2nd May - I attended a football match and as an elderly man was getting up to leave the ground he lost his footing and fell to floor. I went to see if he was OK and whether he was hurt, offering to get a first aider if needed. He was unhurt but shaken. I helped him to his feet and stayed with him until his wife returned. He thanked me for my help - my 'best' made a difference to him in a frightening situation.

Any questions, please ask one of the leaders. Remember to give three examples, rememberto say who your 'best' made a difference to and how and make sure you include your name in your response.
