Thank you to everyone who came along to support the Great Uppermill Fairtrade Bake Off at UMC on March 5th, and well done to the Scouts who resisted the lure of sledging to come along and help. The very respectable sum of £120 was raised for the charities that we are supporting - Oldham Mountain Rescue Team and Shelterbox, and Scouting honour was satisfied when our young leader, Freya Upton won the overall baking prize with her Malteser Tiffin. A Cub from Greenfield won the junior competition, and our Fairtrade Champion, with the highest proportion of Fairtrade ingredients, was Sylvia White.
At our last meeting of term we took part in an international Scouts bowling competition, the fabulously named Jambowlree. Our three sections and Young Leaders teamed up with the Cubs and Explorers from 127th Oldham, St. Thomas’ Moorside and had a fun time at Hollywood Bowl in Ashton. We have submitted the scores of our best teams, to the international competition, and all our participants have earned their Jambowlree badge - all Scouts love a badge!
All through this term, Freya Upton has been giving up her Monday evenings (and quite a few Sundays), to complete the very demanding training required to become a climbing instructor with the Scouts. We are happy to report that she has passed her assessment, and will therefore be able to instruct our young people at any of the Scout activity centres that we visit. This will be a real bonus for us, and will make it easier to give our members more opportunities to participate in what can be an expensive sport. We’re hoping to use her expertise to help some of our Scouts complete their Adventure Challenge Award this summer.
We’re now looking forward to a busy and action-packed summer term. If you would like to be kept up to date with what we do you can follow us on Facebook (20th Oldham Scouts) and on Twitter (@20tholdham) and there is more information about us on our website www.20tholdham.co.uk
