February

We feel very settled into 2017 already, so it seems strange to be thinking back to before Christmas, but we do have a couple of things to look back on: we were a part of the second Christmas Fair held at UMC, and a quite a few of our young people had the opportunity to get involved and help us to raise some money for the two good causes that we support - Shelterbox and Oldham Mountain Rescue Team.

We also held a presentation evening at the end of the autumn term. We awarded Challenge and Activity badges to young people from all 3 of our sections, and Freya and Erica were given their Duke of Edinburgh Diamond Challenge awards (Matt and Rachel have since completed their awards as well). There was also a surprise visit from our Oldham Borough District Commissioner, who presented Erica with her Wood Beads - the culmination of Scout Leader training. We were also very pleased to welcome Adam Knight from Oldham Mountain Rescue Team, who we presented with a cheque for £200. Those of you who were there will remember that Freya also gave a brief presentation about the different things she had had to do to complete her Queen’s Scout Award, so we were very pleased to hear this week from the County Commissioner that she has now officially passed - we are just waiting to hear whether she will be invited to the Queen’s Scouts Parade at Windsor Castle this year, or will have to wait until 2018.

Our numbers have steadily increased this term, and we now have 19 Beavers, 25 Cubs and 13 Scouts (lucky for some!). The Cubs have already had a visit from the PCSOs and been to look around behind the scenes at Tesco, whilst the Beavers are finding out about the marine environment - 14 of them are looking forward to our sleepover at the Sea Life Centre at the beginning of February - and I must admit the leaders, and the parents who are joining us, are looking forward to it too.
